Quaderni is among the most important scientific journals of the Historical Research Center. It was founded in 1971 and has been published regularly on an annual basis since 1997. The magazine offers articles and essays dedicated to the analysis of different aspects of Istro-Rijeka-Dalmatian history in contemporary times, essays on local history, original research carried out by the institute’s researchers, as well as biographies that valorise figures who have given their historical contribution -cultural to the territory. All volumes present various thematic threads ranging from political history, to the history of art and architecture, to social history. A characterizing element of the magazine is the co-presence of Croatian, Slovenian and Italian scholars from universities, historical and research institutes of the three entities that deal with the history of our territory. The themes that constituted the underlying theme of the magazine until the 1990s were linked to the history of the Istrian workers’ movement, anti-fascism and the popular struggle for liberation in Istria and Rijeka with a view to understanding and clarifying the role of the Italian component in the more general history of Istria and Fiume in contemporary times. The themes and problems addressed from the mid-1990s onwards have instead ranged from the analysis of the complex aspects relating to the disintegration of the Yugoslav state, to the controversial political and economic aspects of the history of Istria and Fiume in contemporary times, to research relating to irredentism, to the Free State of Fiume, to the history of the Italian national community.
